Everything alive makes a characteristic sound. We hear that very clearly in nature, each voice of nature being a signature sound; revealing it’s source, it’s distinct character, where it's coming from. We human beings have our own signature sound and this is our voice. There's nothing more characteristic than our voice expressing who we are, expressing the essence of our being. Nobody else has that same voice than me or you. Once you know the voice of a person, you won’t forget it. You hear it again and you immediately recognize the person. There is a soul vibration in that voice, a signature, and you remember it; it stays with you.

In my mother tongue the voice is called “Stimme” and destiny is called “Bestimmung,” the voice that is given to us. This suggests that the voice is very closely related to the essence of our being. Our voice changes with time but nevertheless there is always an unchanging tone present in it also, a sound characteristic for ourselves.

Our voice is a very powerful sound, because it has a living breath. Breath is carrying our voice.

Did you ever think about what is the difference between breath and voice?

Breath is the carrier of the voice, and if we breathe, especially if we exhale through our mouth, there is already a sound, a silent, airy sound.

But what makes that breath become voice? I would say it needs an activity of our spirit. Once our spirit is touching the breath, it becomes our voice. Once there is an impulse given, then that breath becomes audible, becomes voice. It’s a truly beautiful experience to feel that link and connection between breath and voice in a conscious way. Discovering the voice is a great journey and healing indeed. It is our voice, the most personal and intimate expression of our being.

So, every vocal expression needs the activity of our spirit, a command or impulse for our voice to rise and be heard, for our breathing to become a tone. In that way the neutral sound of the breath becomes charged with a certain quality and becomes audible, creative..

The most primal expressions of our voice are instinctive. The newborn baby starts to cry, we sense danger and scream, feel anger and shout, scream from pleasure or joy, laugh in excitement. All those instinctive voices are powerful and come from the depths of our being. They speak directly to our whole being and break down the barriers of separation.

Instinctive sounds have always been essential for our survival and the voice still carries this basic function.

The human voice is furthermore carrying and expressing an emotion.

When I talk to you now, there are the words that I'm speaking and you hear those words and you think about them, you feel them, reflect them in your mind, they reach your consciousness. But apart from what I'm saying, apart from the logical context of those words, there is a feeling, there is a vibration that I transmit through that voice and that subtle content is an emotion, a feeling, an intention that the tone is charged with. And this is what is transmitted through the voice.

Of course speech and language are a means of communication, but on a more hidden level our voice carries a message beyond the words and logical context. Like other every living sound, our voice transmits hidden codes of harmony, expressing a feeling and charge the given to it. Some voices we love, others we can’t stand. There is a cognitive content of voice, a subtle but clear quality and message that arrives with every word spoken.

The same word can convey a thousand meanings, it is the music in it that counts and reaches the much deeper levels of our being. With every word we can create tremendous joy or suffering, and speaking without clarity can be extremely destructive. We can express the full range of emotions with our voice, charge it with any feeling or spirit, give an intention and it will have an effect.

When a mother is singing to her baby, she will naturally bring that healing forth, that peace forth that that the baby is longing for in that moment, just by passing a certain emotion through the voice. It doesn't matter what she sings, what the lullaby is all about. It's the spirit, the emotion that is passing through the voice.

Our voice is a living link to nature and all existence and our song a beautiful answer to the mystery of life. Singing makes us feel part of something grander and allows us to resonate with the universal chord of nature’s symphony.

Many times children just sing, and so do many simple people that live in more natural environments, because singing makes us happy, helps us tune into the moment and feel at home. In modern life many people are developing all kind of reasons not to sing anymore and they lose that innocent expression and joy, the trust in their voice and their connection to it. There are many layers to our voice, and sometimes, when a person had some traumatic experiences in his life, also the voice closed. There is an energy that is blocked somewhere in the body and also the voice is responding to it. But once that door is opened again, once we open those layers of your voice, allow those energy blocks to release and transform, it brings a lot of healing and joy into our life.

Freeing our voice is freeing ourselves. By opening the resonance body of our voice and freeing our expression, we create an open channel for our voice. We are touching the real nature of our being, an authentic expression of our true self.

The magical power of voice / sacred communion

Our voice has a magnetism and atmosphere that depends on our inner state of being, and discovering our voice means discovering all the layers of our personality. We can learn to travel with our voice throughout the body, feel its resonance and energetic flow, and when we tune into our voice, an amazing process of alignment, of tuning is happening to our body, mind and soul. And this is nothing new. We are not inventing anything new here.

This is what healers and shamans always knew to do. Ever since they understood, the voice is a channel, and through the voice is a very powerful way to transmit a certain energy, a certain message, a certain emotion, a certain information that is missing in the body. And by that way, a certain healing effect is achieved. With his prayer and his song, the Shaman connects to the world of spirit and establishes a connection, so that a certain resonance can happen. The song within the community brings that together harmonious field where everybody is tuned in, where everybody becomes part of a unification that is happening, a harmonizing that is happening through the voice, through that energy field of the voice.

In every tradition in this world, you will find different ways, different practices, of working with the voice, to connect to the world of spirit, to connect to nature or bring forth your intention in a prayer. It has a completely central place not only in the communication between each other but in the communion with nature, with the world of spirit, in communion with the ‘Divine'.

Final

Our voice is more than communication: it is a living bridge between inner truth and outer world. It carries our breath, our feeling, our signature soul-sound. When we reclaim that voice—we remember ourselves and re-tune to the symphony of life. It becomes a tool for clarity, for relationship, and for sacred communion.

Finally, remember that voice is a sacred art and a living medicine. It asks only for your attention, your breath, and your willingness to be vulnerable. And as your voice opens, so does your capacity to be seen, to comfort, to lead, and to hold others in presence. The more honest and present your voice becomes, the more trust it builds—in you, in those around you, and in the living field of sound that connects us all.
